Tuckpointing London’s Historic House Museum

The Wallace Collection, London - Specialist Subcontractor to SSH Conservation

The Wallace Collection underwent a full exterior refurbishment, over the duration of the works we carried out a wide range of works including reinstallation of the repaired rainwater goods, stabilisation of failed stucco render using helical bars and several brick replacements and areas of localised rebuilding.

We also joined the team of traditional Tuck pointers to repoint the whole facade. We first chopped out the original red stopping mortar to a sufficient depth; we did this with an angle grinder with modified blades. We cut the joints out without any damage to the original brick’s arris’, a hammer and chisel and tungsten English drag was used to finish off the joints neatly ready to receive the new stopping mortar and tuck ribbon.

Being in a central London location we used dust suppression at source with a dust shroud attachment to a M class hoover.

The joints were cleaned and dampened down, the stopping mortar was put in. The binder was NHL 2, and a fine building sand. The mortar was toned with the use of red/orange iron oxide pigments. Once this has sufficient set it was brushed back and scored ready to receive the Lime Putty and fine aggregate Tuckpoint ribbon.
